History of Modern Yoga
Sunday Feb 2nd
10am – 12:30pm
Explore the emergence of modern, physical yoga practices in the 20th century. We will discuss the pre-modern status of Hatha Yoga, its postures and practices. Compare that to late 19th century exercise regimes like gymnastics, callisthenics and bodybuilding, and take it all in the context of colonialism and Indian masculinity and nationalism. The physical yoga cultures of Lonavala, Mysore, Rishikesh and Kolkata came out of these cultural phenomena, developing into what we recognise as modern yoga.
